Dr. Gergana Dimitrova is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Neurologist with more than three decades of clinical experience in the United States. She has been practicing psychiatry since 1991 and brings extensive expertise in addiction medicine, dual diagnosis treatment, crisis stabilization, and hospital leadership.
Professional Background
Dr. Dimitrova completed her Psychiatry Residency at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2000. Following residency, she served as Medical Director and Clinical Psychiatrist for the Worcester County Health Department from 2000 to 2008, where she led county-wide mental health initiatives and developed innovative addiction and dual diagnosis programs. During this time, she also created integrative care models to support primary care providers treating patients with chronic pain and elevated risk for addiction.
She worked closely with ACT teams, crisis response units, and law enforcement to evaluate and treat individuals in psychiatric crises, and was an early participant in pilot Telepsychiatry programs when the model was first introduced more than 20 years ago.
From 2008 to 2020, Dr. Dimitrova served as Medical Director at CCBH in Greer, South Carolina. Under her leadership, the facility expanded from 84 beds to 156 beds and became one of the top-performing behavioral health hospitals nationwide. She helped establish best clinical practices, strengthen physician leadership, and develop comprehensive service lines including:
- Addiction and dual diagnosis programs
- Adult mood disorder units
- Geriatric inpatient psychiatric services
- Crisis stabilization units for severe psychosis
- Child and adolescent psychiatric programs
In 2020, she transitioned to AdventHealth Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she continues to serve as Medical Director. There, she has expanded specialized services for women with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, particularly those with trauma histories. She also optimizes detoxification protocols for complex cases and consults on medically complicated detox patients in hospital and ICU settings.
Dr. Dimitrova actively participates in Henderson County board discussions addressing the opioid crisis and collaborates with community leaders to improve regional behavioral health response systems.
In 2024, she became involved with SCAT, where she continues to support program development, physician leadership, and clinical growth.
Clinical Philosophy
Dr. Dimitrova believes in evidence-based, integrative care that addresses the full complexity of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She is committed to building strong multidisciplinary teams, advancing physician leadership, and implementing structured best practices that improve safety, outcomes, and long-term recovery stability.
Her work reflects a deep understanding that effective psychiatric treatment must balance medical precision with compassion, structure with flexibility, and acute stabilization with long-term planning.
Through decades of leadership, innovation, and clinical excellence, Dr. Dimitrova continues to advance high-quality psychiatric and addiction treatment programs that serve individuals, families, and communities.
