What Does Our Outpatient Addiction Treatment Include?

Carolina Center for Recovery’s Outpatient rehab program serves adults who have completed a higher level of care and require continued clinical contact for relapse prevention and recovery skill development. Outpatient clients are stepping down from Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), transitioning from inpatient rehab, or maintaining stabilization while living independently. Outpatient is the lowest level of clinical intervention on the continuum.

Sessions are scheduled weekly or bi-weekly based on individual clinical need and stabilization progress. Length of stay is determined by clinical progress, with many clients participating for several months to over a year. Step-down from outpatient rehab leads to alumni programming or continued care with the assigned licensed clinician’s private practice.

Outpatient therapy sessions consist of weekly individual therapy with an assigned licensed addiction-specialty clinician applying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing to address triggers, employment stress, and relationship dynamics encountered between sessions. Group sessions are available when clinically indicated.

Sessions are delivered in-person or virtually through a secure HIPAA-compliant video platform. Case management coordinates employment accommodations, family-session referrals, and support for legal or financial barriers.

Individual Therapy Session: Clients meet one-on-one with the assigned licensed clinician. The clinician reviews clinical content from the prior week, identifies triggers encountered, and reinforces coping strategies. The clinician evaluates skill use and adjusts the treatment plan based on clinical progress.

Group Session (when clinically indicated): Group sessions support peer connection and applied skill use among clients in outpatient. Group content focuses on relapse prevention and recovery skill use in everyday situations.

Outside outpatient sessions, clients support clinical progress by:

– Applying CBT and DBT skills from sessions to triggers in everyday life
– Attending mutual-aid meetings (AA, NA, SMART Recovery, or similar)
– Maintaining employment and family routines
– Strengthening household communication patterns
– Building independent recovery routines
– Contacting the on-call clinical line in the event of a clinical crisis

Post-IOP Step-Down: Outpatient addiction treatment progam is indicated for clients who have completed IOP and require continued clinical contact for relapse prevention and recovery skill development.

Continued Care During Employment: Outpatient treatment supports clients maintaining full-time employment who require addiction-specialty clinical contact for sustained recovery.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Maintenance: Outpatient treatment is indicated for clients managing major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder alongside recovery, with coordinated psychiatric and addiction care.

Medication Management: Outpatient care supports clients on medications for substance use disorder or co-occurring mental health conditions who require ongoing oversight by an addiction-specialty psychiatric provider.

Relapse Prevention Focus: Outpatient services are indicated for clients with prior relapse who require focused clinical contact to identify and manage high-risk situations.

Our Outpatient Treatment Process

The clinical team conducts a comprehensive assessment during the first outpatient sessions. The assessment reviews treatment history, current clinical content, and recovery goals. The on-site psychiatric provider conducts a psychiatric evaluation at intake and reviews medications. The assigned licensed clinician identifies the triggers and stressors that will be the focus of ongoing outpatient sessions.

Sessions in this phase reinforce CBT and DBT skills introduced in IOP or higher levels of care. The assigned clinician applies the skills to current employment, family, and social context. The assigned clinician identifies cognitive and behavioral patterns that require ongoing clinical attention and adjusts the treatment plan accordingly.

The assigned clinician supports increasingly independent skill use as clinical stabilization is sustained. Sessions process clinical content from the prior week and identify patterns. Session frequency may decrease (weekly to bi-weekly) as the client demonstrates consistent skill use without clinical intervention.

The clinical team plans transition to alumni programming or continued care with the assigned licensed clinician’s private practice. The clinician reviews clinical progress, identifies ongoing risk factors, and confirms long-term maintenance plans. Community supports, mutual-aid meetings, and crisis-line resources are confirmed before formal discharge.

The Carolina Center for Recovery admissions team determines whether outpatient is the appropriate level of care.

Our Outpatient Program Admission Process

1

Step 1: Contact the Admissions Team and Verify Insurance

The Carolina Center for Recovery admissions team conducts initial screening by phone or web inquiry. The client representative verifies insurance and reviews coverage and financial responsibility for outpatient. Some plans are approved without live verification.

2

Step 2: Complete Clinical Assessment

Pre-admission screening is conducted by a licensed clinician by phone, video, or in-person. The screening determines outpatient appropriateness, identifies treatment-plan content, and supports clinician assignment.

3

Step 3: Coordinate Medical Detox (If Required)

Clients who require medical detox before outpatient begin at Charlotte Detox Center. Most outpatient clients have completed detox and a higher level of care before stepping down to outpatient.

4

Step 4: Begin Outpatient Program

Once insurance is approved and pre-admission screening is complete, outpatient begins in the next available session. The first session includes intake with the assigned licensed clinician and a psychiatric evaluation by the on-site psychiatric provider when medication coordination is clinically indicated.
