Finding the Right Drug Rehab for You
Finding the Right Drug Rehab for You
Getting treatment for drug addiction is a life-changing process that is crucial to attaining long term recovery. However, choosing the right drug rehab for you can be a difficult task. There are hundreds of treatment centers to choose from, but some will be better tailored to meet your specific needs than others. While many drug rehabs use similar treatment modalities, all treatment centers are different in style. Before choosing a drug rehab center, it is important to do your research and know what your needs are.
Levels of Care
Comprehensive addiction treatment is a crucial part of beginning your recovery. However, there are different levels of care offered by addiction treatment providers. It is important to determine which level of care is best suited to meet your needs and treatment goals.
Detox is usually an essential step in the recovery process. My drugs are physically addictive, meaning that when a person stops using, they will experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Some of these symptoms can be dangerous and life-threatening. To make the detox process as safe and comfortable as possible, some drug rehabs will offer medical detox. In detox, clients can receive medical care and medications to help them cope with their withdrawal symptoms.
Inpatient Drug Rehab
Inpatient drug rehab is an option for those suffering from a severe substance use disorder. In this setting, clients will stay at residential housing affiliated with the treatment center. Here they will receive around the clock supervision and guidance while receiving treatment for their drug addiction.
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Intensive outpatient programs, or IOP, are designed to facilitate intensive treatment while a client lives at home or in a sober living community. Blocks of time will be scheduled each week, where clients will attend group and individual therapies. Sometimes IOP is considered to be a step down from inpatient drug rehab as it eases the transition out of treatment back into independent living.
Outpatient Programming (OP)
Outpatient programming, or OP, is best for clients who do not require intensive care and supervision. It is the most flexible treatment option, consisting of regular therapy and counseling services on a scheduled basis. It can include a wide range of different therapies but requires the most independence of clients who only display mild to moderate symptoms of addiction.
Aftercare typically starts after a client has completed their treatment program and is prepared to transition back into the community. Aftercare can consist of sober living, an alumni program, self-help groups, or 12-step meetings. Each person’s recovery will look different, so the type of aftercare they receive should be tailored to meet their unique needs.
Specializations and Types of Therapy
Throughout each level of care in drug rehab, clients will participate in a variety of therapies that will help them heal from addiction. However, different treatment facilities offer different types of therapy and specialize in different treatments.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a form of psychotherapy that is proven effective in treating drug addiction. It teaches clients to learn how their thoughts and emotions affect their behaviors. CBT allows individuals to live happy, healthy lives by changing the ways they think and behave. These therapy sessions can be one-on-one, in a group setting, or with family members.
Dual Diagnosis Therapy
Dual diagnosis therapy focuses on treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders simultaneously. Nearly 50% of people who suffer from addiction also have a mental illness, making it crucial to treat both disorders. Dual diagnosis treatment consists of psychotherapy, medications, support groups, and rehabilitation services.
Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT)
MAT involves the use of medications in tandem with behavioral therapies. Medications used in MAT can include Suboxone, Subutex, Vivitrol, Naltrexone and other approved medications that can aid in the treatment of opioid use disorders.
Faith-based addiction treatment often involves the use of 12 step programs. This type of drug rehab relies heavily on spirituality and the development of healthy relationships through a sober support system.
Trauma-informed care is a type of therapy that focuses on treating trauma and the negative emotions and behaviors that arise from it. Clients participating in trauma-informed care will learn to cope with their trauma and heal from it by developing healthy coping skills.
Things to Consider When Choosing a Drug Rehab
While the options for drug rehab can seem endless, you can begin to narrow down your options once you are educated on the different types of treatment and begin to acknowledge what your specific needs are. Some things to consider when choosing a drug rehab include:
- Length of the treatment program
- Whether or not you need dual diagnosis care
- Family involvement
- Availability of aftercare
- The reputation of the treatment facility
- Use of evidence-based practices
- Recreational therapies and holistic treatment methods
- Licensing and accreditation of the staff and facility
- Treatment philosophy and goals
Once you have done your research, determined your specific treatment needs, and narrowed down your options, you can choose the best drug rehab for you.
